Andy Nguyen is the founder of Calgary's own 6Streets, a men's streetwear brand started only within the past couple years that is already quickly gaining momentum. In a summer 2015 interview, Andy gives some insight into where he comes from, what motivates him, and where he sees our menswear scene going.

Q: What was your background before being in the menswear industry?

A:  Funny enough my background before 6streets had nothing to do with clothing or fashion. Fortunately it had everything to do with business and branding. I worked for a company in sales and marketing, worked my way up the ladder and gained tons of experiences. However there was a missing piece to it all… PURPOSE. I lacked purpose and for that matter passion too. I was so busy selling something that didn’t mean anything to me. So then I took the first to pave my own path. 6streets.

Q: What is 6streets and how did it begin?

A: 6Streets is a lifestyle brand, we create products that cater to the everyday streetwear/menswer enthusiast. We breed casual apparel, so everything that we make has the intention to make you not only look good... but feel good too. The business began after I left my previous career as a sales rep; I was armed with only a laptop, a couple hundred dollars, and an idea

Q: What inspired you to start your own menswear business?

A: Style has always been a big part of my life, especially through my teenage years. We all wanted to look good right? I grew up in a traditional family where I was expected to get a “normal” job that pays well, so it never dawned on me that I could start my own business. I live by a code: “Great things happen when your deepest joy can help serve someone’s deepest need.” This is what inspired me to start my own business. If my passion can help and inspire someone in any kind of way, then that is a successful business in my eyes.

Q: Where does the style of 6streets fit in the overall Calgary menswear scene? What sort of people are you trying to reach?

A: Calgary's menswear scene is definitely growing, and I can confidently say that we have had a positive impact on the industry in the last 12 months. The last thing we want to do is fit in the overall scene, we want to stand out! I believe that being different is the key to short term and long term success.

Q: What do you see for the future of 6streets? Do you have any other projects planned?

A:  We definitely want to take the “POP-UP SHOP” to the next level by taking the brand into other cities. Our long term goal is to have an impact on the streetwear and menswear scene at an international level.

Q: If you could pick 5 favorite menswear items (shoes, shirts, pants, anything!), what would they be?

A: The denim jacket, white sneakers, the gold watch, HAN sunglasses, and a leather biker jacket.

Q: Any shout-outs?

A: To everyone who’s supported the journey along the way. Could not have done this alone!
