This article, titled "Big Beginnings," chronicles the recent history of Calgary's menswear evolution from the bare environment of the early 2000s to the quickly growing and diverse scene of today. "‘Mens fashion’ and ‘Calgary’ don’t usually end up in the same sentence. Our city is a locale often forgotten amidst some of Canada’s better-established fashion centres.
When considering the runaway success of iconic eastern Canadian ventures such as the Capsule Toronto shops and Montreal’s Frank & Oak brand, it’s striking how small and unestablished our own menswear community seems to be in comparison.
Up until the past five to ten years, Calgary hosted a bland menswear landscape of little beyond small boutiques catered to conservatively-styled middle-aged professionals. Few men in YYC had any exposure to modern men’s fashion, and even fewer felt comfortable identifying as a fashion-forward man in our city.
