Because in Calgary weather is made up and seasons don’t matter, it’s hard to reach a general consensus on what marks the start of summer. For some Calgarians, it’s that first patio Pimms at National. For others, it’s that first rafting trip down the Bow. However, for Calgary’s style-inclined community, there’s no better way to tell summer is here than the arrival of the annual PARK (Promoting Artists, Redefining Kulture) series. For more information on this series, check out last season’s LUXE article. As a series first this year, the not-for-profit local fashion series celebrated its 9th birthday with a double-evening PARKSHOW (as opposed to what was previously one night). With casual sportswear and swimwear on Friday night and high fashion on Saturday night, this year’s double header ensured once and for-all that no fashion-conscious Calgarian has any excuse left to miss one of the biggest runway events of the year.
The two-night format this year provided summer wear inspiration for both the high-fashion runway crowd and the streetwear crowd. On Friday, guests were treated to the first ever full streetwear night, which gave the opportunity for both regular figures such as Lennard Taylor and Kate Hewko, and newcomers such as NRTHRNTWNS and Seed Yoga to present a wide variety of predominantly colourful summer 2016 looks. On Saturday, we saw the anything-but-usual high-fashion suspects such as SP Badu and House of Nonie present their minimalist modern visions for summer, many of which featured notable use of black and white, as well as immaculate attention to tailoring (of which we saw both loose and fitted). Above all else, the eclectic mix of runway shows at PARKSHOW 2016 seemed to showcase the theme of inclusivity in this summer’s trends; whether that be inclusivity in colour choice, sizing, or pattern mixing.
As expected, guest outfit choices were equally as varied and sartorially-advanced. Notable picks were a Looney Tunes snapback (worn by none other than Ryan “Mr Fabulous” Massel), a vintage polyester pink and white button down shirt, and an all-over floral print outfit. Out of all the amazing outfits, I nominate @paulconradschneider for best dressed, in a one-of-a-kind leather presto jacket drawn on himself with white marker. In case you weren’t there, or you were too busy sampling gelato, drinking free charcoal lemonade, or checking out the Miami-inspired artwork to check out the designer pop-up shops and the amazing outfits, PARK has secured the show’s location (the empty space right next to Nordstrom) for the entire month of June. So whether you want to check out the show’s styles firsthand, or just mingle with some very approachable Canadian designers, it’s not too late!
