For Calgary, Stampede is pretty much our thing. For anybody outside of Calgary, the Stampede is a 10-day stretch of summer where we celebrate our traditional western heritage with rodeos, wagon races, and other thematic events. It's usually accompanied by excessive drinking and questionable judgement, but always accompanied by a city-wide adoption of western style fashion. Even for those Calgarians who aren't directly going down to the Stampede grounds, they're still most likely donning a carbon-copy western outfit to visit one of the many rodeos in the surrounding towns.
For the few fashion-conscious citizens of YYC (ie you reading this blog), Stampede may leave us in a peculiar position. How to blend a very traditional Stampede-style outfit with modern fashion-forward elements to stand out? When everybody is going to wear some variation of denim-on-denim, plaid, cowboy boots, and/or cowboy hats, how do you subvert that formula into an original outfit?
As proven in other stylistic genres, the easiest and most surefire way to stand out is to accessorize. Hence, here are my top three accessory picks for an easy Stampede-style upgrade:
