Fashion Forward is a yearly fashion showcase in collaboration with the nonprofit Homefront organization that curates a small selection of designers, artists, and local figures for an intimate show. Without a doubt, the best part of these events is the charitable aspect. Through Homefront Calgary, this event raises money to combat domestic violence, and on this particular evening raised over $20,000 for their cause. Homefront Calgary fights local domestic violence through advocacy in the political and legal system, financial support for victims, and the support of programs to reduce rates of re-offence of perpetrators.
Secondarily to this amazing cause, the event also featured a fantastic fashion show featuring the stylings of Kate Hewko, Lennard Taylor, and Paul Hardy, as well as a special celebrity show curated by Saks Fifth Avenue. The three-designer mix was certainly an eclectic combination in this relatively small show, and provided lots of very interesting looks. Kate Hewko opened up the show with, naturally, an exuberant and pattern-heavy showcase consisting of many furry textures that I was compelled to pet after the show.
Lennard took his tried-and-true approach to craft-focused subtlety, with a noticeable introduction of some more colour pops. I have become more used to a muted palette from him, but this show paired some more colour with his classic painted dressed, which I personally think worked particularly well.
Lastly, Paul Hardy came through with another texture-heavy, luxurious line of just-eccentric-enough pieces that are always pulled off well.
